School example
Language
Short description
Classroom posters
E
Year 1 children create posters about each learner profile attribute in this example from Melbourne, Australia. This example stresses the importance of the children using their own words to describe each attribute. This example includes a slide presentation.
Emerging behaviours
E
A series of 10 templates are provided in this example, designed to help teachers develop a pathway for establishing understanding in regards to recognizable behaviour traits that might become apparent in the children as they work with the learner profile.
Parent newsletters
E
This example explains how newsletters were used as a way to communicate the learner profile attributes to parents.
Attributes for parents
E
As part of a forum promoting greater parent engagement, parents in this example created their own displays for learner profile attributes.
Attributes for PYP educators
E
If educators want children to become familiar with the learner profile attributes, this example argues, we must also show that we, as the educators, believe in and act out these attributes in all that we do in our role as educators.
Visual metaphors
E
In this example, students create visual metaphors to represent their understanding of learner profile attributes.
Open-minded
E
The purpose of the activity in this example was to engage students in thoughtful consideration of their own open-mindedness by prompting them to recognize and then challenge their own assumptions.
Reflective
E
In this example, students reflect on specific learning tasks in order to engage in conversation about their own learning with their parents at home.
Staff meeting
E
An inquiry into the attributes of the learner profile can form an important part of a staff meeting.
Thinkers
E
How teaching the vocabulary of thinking helps children to better articulate their own thinking about thinking and the ways that students’ ideas about thinking change as a result of learning more about the processes, kinds and vocabulary of thinking during the school year.
Learner profile tree
E
Teachers working with Grade 3 children have used a learner profile tree to help their students deepen their understanding of the learner profile attributes.
Involving parents
E
This activity allows students to share their understanding of the LP attributes with their family, building on their school experiences at home and then bringing back the understandings from this process into the classroom.
Early exploration of the learner profile
E
This is a small group activity which could be done as a PD session at a school or part of a session in a Level 1 IB workshop.
Cultural forces and the learner profile
E
Cultural forces send powerful messages of what is truly valued and worth knowing and doing in our classrooms and schools.

LP Week Meeting: August 29, 2014
Present: Pete, Koong, Ms Nui, On-Ann, Krista, Niko, Ploy
Apologies: Glenn

Discussion:
- Activities for LP week:
  • Profile Cards: Each student gets one card to decorate to their liking. Have them choose the profile word that is most meaningful to them and design accordingly. On the back, list any attitudes that connect to the profile word selected. Once the cards are made, please have them laminated. Then, the students can trade away. The hope is that they will give cards to friends as a way of appreciating and acknowledging their actions, as well as receive cards for their own greatness. Ideally the cards will be ready ASAP so the kids can start trading (appreciating) right away.
  • Additional activities collated by the Intl. Mindedness committee:
- Dragon's head – each time a student displays one of the LP attributes, a scale is added to the dragon's body so that as the year progresses the dragon gets bigger.
- Similar ideas for sunflowers with leaves or trees with leaves that are added with students' names and LP traits.
- Star chart (weekly) with student names and LP attributes.
- Add photos of the students to LP posters. Include speech bubbles also.
- Learner profile action wall with photos of children in action.
- Posters made by the children.
Other ideas:
- Friend detectives
- Stickers, pins and badges.
- LP song – Nicholas can teach you
- Awards for displaying IBLP traits.
  • Monday: 1:50 - 2:25: LP launch assembly
  • All week: Begin taking photos and video of students being "Thinkers" and "Caring", then upload them to the appropriate Dropbox folder. For the next 10 weeks we will be compiling photos and videos for a profile movie. Niko will be sending out details for the theme of each week.
  • Friday: Profile dress up day. Wear an outfit the expresses one of the profile words.

- Also, please check Niko's blog for ideas of how to incorporate profile experiences into your day.

Action:
- Send meeting notes to Glenn (Pete)
- Make facilities request for Monday assembly (Glenn)

LP Week Meeting: August 27, 2014
Present: Pete, Koong, Ms Nui, On-Ann, Glenn, Krista, Niko

Discussion:
- LP Week to start new initiative to develop 2014 KIS LP video:
  • Specific focus on a particular attribute each week
  • Teachers/TAs to shoot video that displays certain LP related behaviors
  • Guidelines to be developed and communicated by Niko and Steve
  • Attitudes to be somehow linked to LP attributes

- LP Week Committee to develop activity ideas that grades can choose from. Each grade level should do at least one activity throughout the week:
  • LP student award cards
  • LP Week Assembly to be held Monday at 1:50?
  • Each grade to generate a set of (unique) LP display posters
  • Develop LP trailers using iMovie
  • Create an interactive LP display space where students identify and record other students that have displayed behaviors that relate to attributes of the LP

LP Week Meeting: August 22, 2014
Present: Pete, Koong, Ms Nui, On-Ann, Glenn

Discussion:
- What is the purpose of LP Week? (Raise awareness of the LP; introduce strategies/structures that can be carried on throughout the year; highlight and celebrate this important aspect of the program...)
- Try to make it as student-led as possible
- Is the week only focused on the LP?
Ideas:
  • Assembly to launch LP week on Monday 1st: teacher and/or student skits where students are asked to identify which attribute is being featured
  • Each grade generate an original set (or sets) of LP displays that will be displayed in each classroom
  • Each grade to create an interactive LP display space where students identify and record other students that have displayed behaviors that relate to attributes of the LP
  • Grades use iMovie to create trailers relating to the LP
